Search and Rescue

At 9:54am our group of 10 gathered at the trail head to begin our hike up Fisher Towers Trail.

Kirk McKinley

 Marilyn and Vicky

Vicky was trailing behind the group with Alan and Eileen Perkins,  So the rest of them were ahead of us.  Alan was showing us where the trail really went, when ? I can't remember her name) came to the top of rise the rest of our hikers went over and said that Saundra had broken her leg.

 10:29am

10:34am We believe the accident happened while Saundra was jumping from one unlevel rock to another.  And Sanudra had a compound fracture of her ankle.  By the time Vicky got there Kirk had moved the bone back inside the skin and slowed the bleeding.  Kirk was a ski patrolman for many years.  Vicky got the first aid items they needed out of her backpack and they began to spint Saundra's leg.  Vicky grabbed a walking stick (thinking it was hers) pulled it apart and they used it to make the splint for her leg. (It was actually Kirk's walking stick).   Vicky and Kirk wrapped it together. Vicky had Wilderness First Aid Training with the Boy Scouts of America.  We refered to the First Aid card several times for confirmation while waiting with Saundra for help to arrive.
Waiting for help to arrive 10:57am

  Still hanging in there.  11:13am

First Officer arrives.  He ran up the trail in full uniform & Kevlar, impressing all of us.  He radioed for a helicopter.

By 12:03pm The EMT's in blue shirts had arrived and were putting a magic bead leg splint on.  They had already put the IV in and given her pain medication.

12:22pm  And then the 8 Search and Rescue people arrived in orange shirts.

Marilyn, Kirk, and Vicky stayed close by.

EMT and Search in rescue working together.

They strapped Saundra into a "magic beads stretcher"  to transport her down to the trail.  Cool magic beads:  they put air in, then sucked the air out and it would harden and be formed to Saundra and hardened.

I hope this video works, named by Saundra "This is Fun"

And they began to carry Sandra back down to the trail.

Right above Marilyn's shoulder you can see a large log laying there, blocking the way, a sign of "this is not trail".  None of us seemed to notice it, we just stepped over it.

The first hurdle was just getting back to the trail.  Then they placed Saundra in the metal basket to carry her back to the parking lot.

I have a lot of pictures, I'll have to finish later
